Orchard Establishment Examples

Welcome to our Honeyberry or Haskap orchard establishment examples section. We would like to start off with by saying, there is no right or wrong way to establish an orchard. Well perhaps, there is more of a wrong way than a correct way, as the picture below suggest.

Wrong way and a right way?

Honeyberry orchard requirements

In our opinion, it has to meet three basic requirements, in no particular order of importance. Firstly the orchard’s site should be a thing of natural beauty. Remember no great vineyard or wine is produced from under plastic. However if your business plan requires it. Then we understand, but we will probably be unable to help you. We have compared the two establishment methods below, and we favour advising and following the example of the left.

Secondly, this stage has to be well designed to meet your overall objectives – in particular, an orchard that is functional and optimized for sustainability and profitability.

Thirdly remember the adage – “Less is, More” – vast quantities of bulbous, heavily irrigated, waterlogged Honeyberries should end up in a standard muffin rather than on our table or in our glass. We always encourage growers to start in baby steps and recognise the difference of growing raw berries or growing bottles of wine.

What is possible over 12 months?

Follow the easy instructions laid out in ‘Your Essential Honeyberry Guide.’ Then it is possible to go from invitro plantlet (below left) to young established orchard over 12 months. How do we know? Well, we have already done it in Scotland.

We left a couple of young Honeyberry plants (in 3 gall or 11 litre grow bags) in the poly-tunnels for a full year. We created a very large and compact root ball. You can see the new grow produced this year is impressive, but unbalanced compared to the size of its root ball. We prefer to plant a smaller and less root bound Honeyberry plant in the orchard and believe it will settle in faster than the larger plant below.

Orchard establishment examples

In this section, we have included three establishing examples of Honeyberry orchards and will report back in the coming years as they mature.

The aim in the first orchard was to maximise the growth of the young plug plants in two gallon pots, under the cover of poly-tunnels. While the orchard was being prepared during the summer months to improve the soil health and compost tea irrigation (please refer to the Soil Therapy Report). The plants were planted in the Fall, and a cover crop was planted to help with weed control. We love his home-made tea sprayer – The Madonna.

The grower of the one-acre orchard wanted to plant his young 3 and a half inch plant plugs directly into his well-prepared orchards rows. These plants were planted in the Spring and were very well fertilized and hand weeded throughout the season.

The third example is from Poland and shows two examples of growing young plants under fabric or planting larger two-year plants without. We prefer to spend the fabric investment on cover crops and soil improvement and when Krug starts to us fabric we will follow. It is an excellent example to show that there is no right or wrong way to establish an orchard. Just create an orchard plan that works for you and execute it.

In all cases plant growth and health are very impressive. We will forward to tasting these orchard’s berries in the coming season. We cover the establishment of both these orchards in more detail in our book – Your Essential Honeyberry Guide.

Example One – 10-acre organic orchard

The aim in the first orchard example was to maximise the growth of the young plug plants in two gallon pots, under the cover of poly-tunnels. While the orchard was being prepared during the summer months to improve the soil health and compost tea irrigation (please refer to the Soil Therapy Report). The plants were planted in the Fall, and a cover crop was planted to help with weed control. We love his home-made tea sprayer – The Madonna.
